Fifteen
I have become very good at lying to Carron. In fact, I’m appalled at the level of trust he has in me. It’s Thursday night, and I am yet to inform him that I will be away for the weekend. With another man no less. I’m sure if he knew he would be more than upset. Shocked and disbelief are words that spring to mind.
For once he has a night off and he’s suggested we make some tacos with homemade salsa while sipping on a Cabernet Sauvignon I picked up on my way home from work. It’s cozy in the kitchen. The little pot belly stove in the corner of the room is doing its job nicely and warming the air in the room. The cat is encircling herself around my legs, patiently waiting for scraps of food that might fall her way. Carron prepares the meat while I continue to chop vegetables.
‘How was your day?’ I ask, already knowing full well where this conversation is going to end up.
‘Great! I got to go fishing this morning, and then had a quick lunch with Eddy at the grill before topping it all off with football on the couch this afternoon.’
‘Sounds like your kind of day.’
‘Yeah, I kind of needed the time off, especially since I’m rostered to work right through from tomorrow till Tuesday.’
‘That’s hardly fair,’ I offer. To be honest I’m thrilled, but it wouldn’t do to be openly excited about it.
‘Yeah, but it’s money in the pocket and it won’t be for too much longer. The hospital is having a reshuffle of staff so we can cope with the increasing demand for patient care. And you know me; I never knock back a cry for help when it’s needed.’ He smiles so kindly at me then I just about die.
I’m entranced by his face, as though seeing him for the first time since we first got together. His hair is longer, and he has it tied up at the back today. The stubble on his chin is still there and tonight he has his glasses on, endearing me to him all the more. Empathy is not something I allow Carron, because he is mine – to be here for me when I need him. It was me who cried for his help when we first got together, wanting someone to take my mind off Angel. He did that without even knowing it. To be fair to him, I’m going to have to call off the engagement.
Whether Angel goes through with ‘us’ or not, I can’t ruin Carron’s chance at happiness for the sake of my own selfishness. I try to avoid his eyes as my own start to tear up. I have to stop chopping the vegetables because my blurry eyesight is going to get me my finger chopped off if I’m not careful. My mood change doesn’t go unnoticed by Carron.
‘Hey, Bailey Boo, what’s up honey?’ I stifle a sob at his sincerity and concern.
‘Nothing, it’s just the onions.
